Tips for disposing of cardboard boxes when moving home

By Matt Williams [feather_share]

So after months of planning, you have finally moved in, “unpacked” and are settling into your new home. Now you just need to dispose and declutter your moving boxes out of your new home. At JamVans we offer a free box collection service in and around London and Hertfordshire. The boxes we use are toughened double walled boxes and therefore can be reused several times. This is one of the ways that we offer a more environmentally sustainable removal service in London.

What happens to your removal boxes when they are recycled?

We have recently teamed up with a local charity called The Paper Trail to recycle our boxes once they have come to the end of their life. Based in Hemel Hempstead, Frogmore Paper Mill is the home to the oldest mechanised paper mill as is known to be the birthplace of the paper industrial revolution. As times have moved Frogmore Paper Mill does still produce 100 tonnes of paper ever year, however, for its survival, it relies on its café, mill tours, and charitable activities to sustain.

How does it work?

Although tough, there are only so many times that our removal boxes can be used. Once a week we send a removal van load of used boxes to Frogmore Paper Mill to put into their cardboard bailer. This is then sold by the paper mill which helps fund their educational tours for local schools.

Step one, pulping – the cardboard is turned into a pulp using waters and special chemicals to break down the cardboard, this solidifies the cardboard.

Step two, removing the ink – the pulp is then filtered to remove any unwanted materials such as ink, tape or glue. This pulp in now ready for the finishing stage.

Step three, finishing the process – the pulp is then put onto a conveyor belt and dried with the excess liquid being squeezed out. What is left is liner board which is ready to be sold and created into cardboard.

At JamVans we are committed to our environmental policy with our cardboard boxes being a fundamental part of this. Our boxes are 100% recyclable and we offer a free collection service to ensure that we maximise recycling of our materials.
